Your header image is extremely well done. I love the way the colors flow together so nicely. Unfortunately, once I moved on from the image, it gets rather lost in the overall design of the layout. So my general feeling of your layout ends up being that of one large amalgam of color. I don’t exactly dislike it, but I feel that you could have made much better use of the header image.

These days it’s not exactly often that I am disappointed right at first glance, nevertheless your site comes close to making it happen. Let’s see: I hate the anime Card Captor Sakura and I hate Internet Explorer as a browser. Ironically enough your site looks better in Firefox than in Internet Explorer. There is no sidescrolling for the sidebar, for one. Aside that, I prefer my own browser’s scrollbars; I don’t appreciate when my software (browser in this case) is changed to the liking of another. I’m the only one who uses this computer, after all.

I’m constantly stressing the importance of a straight-forward navigation, however I don’t exactly want to be attacked by one, either. Every time I glance at your layout, my eyes are automatically drawn to the navigation. I suppose if it made use of some “fancy” design (such as Appasionato), it would have some saving grace. That beige background looks rather out of place there too. I’m assuming that the picture frame uses it, however combined with the darker patterns, the overall effect in the picture is much more pleasant. If I were a first time visitor, I wouldn’t spend more than a couple of seconds here.
I rather like the concept of the picture on the left, as well as the way you chose to “complete” it on the bottom. Great job on integrating it with the light gray background, as well as the focus/blur effects… and that’s about all I like about the layout. It’s a pity really, because it has great potential, if used differently.
